Understanding the Structure of Natural and Implant-Supported Teeth

The anatomy of a natural tooth is relatively simple, comprising a root and a crown. This structure is closely mirrored in implant-supported prosthetics. The visible section, the crown, is responsible for the task of mastication, or chewing, while the root secures the tooth below the gum line and anchors it within the jawbone. Implants distinguish themselves by their composition—titanium, a durable material also utilized in joint replacement surgeries. When a tooth is lost, it’s not just the visible part that is missing, but the root as well. To address this, a dental implant acts as a new root.

Post-Implantation Process and Artificial Tooth Placement

Following the insertion of a dental implant, a period of healing is essential. During this phase, the jawbone fuses with the titanium implant, forming a sturdy base for the artificial tooth. Once this foundation is established, a support post, known as an abutment, is affixed to the implant. The final step involves placing the new prosthetic tooth, or crown, atop the abutment. In certain situations, a temporary crown can be attached immediately following the implant procedure. For those who have lost all their teeth, there are multiple treatment methods to support the full set of replacement teeth.

Specifics About the Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implants serve as modern substitutes for natural tooth roots, crafted from metal and embedded directly into the jawbone through surgical means. Once in place, small posts are attached to these implants and extend above the gum line, providing a secure foundation upon which artificial teeth can be anchored. Typically, the installation of dental implants is a two-stage surgical process. Initially, the implants are positioned within the jawbone and are left to integrate with it, usually over a span of three to six months. During this integration phase, patients can generally continue to use temporary dentures and follow a soft food diet. Concurrently, a restorative dentist is tasked with crafting the final bridgework or denture, focusing on enhancing both the functionality and appearance of the teeth. Upon successful integration of the implant with the jawbone, the second stage is initiated. This involves exposing the implants and fitting them with a small healing collar. This is the stage where the creation of new teeth begins, starting with an impression of the mouth. Following this, the posts or attachments are secured to the implants, and the artificial teeth are constructed around these anchor points. The entire process often spans six to eight months, and most patients report minimal to no interference with their everyday activities.
